3 LIVE CE UNITS
Instructor: Tom Viola, R.Ph., CCP
Well over 700 prescription and non-prescription medications have xerostomic side effects, which are compounded when these medications are used concomitantly, as is often the case for our medically complex patients. In addition, little attention is given to those systemic diseases that contribute to the development of xerostomia and/or the exacerbation of its complications. This program will provide an overview of xerostomia, medications used in its management, and the impact of both the disease and its treatment on dental therapy. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to developing patient management strategies and techniques essential for successful treatment, planning, and proper care of patients with xerostomia.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe xerostomia and explain its various etiologies
- Describe the oral and non-oral complications associated with xerostomia
- Identify the systemic diseases which may contribute to the development of xerostomia
- Identify the prescription and non-prescription medications that have xerostomic side effects
- Describe the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management of xerostomia
- Explain the impact of xerostomia, and the medications used in its treatment, on dental therapy
I loved that you gave us perspective on how the patients in our care/chair feel going through life on the daily with some hard conditions/side effects of xerostomia. Appreciate all the helpful info and ways we can be a much greater service to them every day! Wonderful job.

About Live, Interactive Continuing Education Webinars
A live, interactive webinar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community, except that you attend via your computer. Each course is done live in a format that allows your participation. Anyone who has access to a computer that can play sound can participate in an ACES webinar. No special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webinars. When you enroll in any ACES course, you will be sent an email with complete information on how to join the webinar and a copy of the course syllabus. At the conclusion of your live webinar, you will complete a course examination online. You will then be able to print your continuing education certificate from your computer.
