- At least ten percent of the population has some degree of dental anxiety or phobia. This course aims to empower dental professionals to effectively support fearful and anxious patients, thereby reducing the practitioner’s risk of compassion fatigue and burnout.
Patients who are fearful or anxious generate stress for the dental team. In turn, this compromises the team’s ability to deliver quality care, affects workflow and can contribute to patient errors.
This course discusses models and techniques for effectively responding to stressful patients and staving off stress contagion, emotional exhaustion, burnout, compassion fatigue and other threats that compromise quality of patient care and the emotional and physical health of the dental professional.
Course Objectives:
- The psycho-biology of anxiety, fear, and phobia as they relate to a patient’s experience.
- Learn to empower the dental team to handle stressors and challenges posed by fearful and anxious patients.
- Learn the importance of self-regulation and dyadic regulation in helping patients overcome their dental anxiety.
- Learn the COPE method empowers patients to calm themselves when they are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stressed.
- Learn how workplace burnout, stress contagion, and spillover stress negatively impact patient safety and the health and wellbeing of the dental team.
- Learn how dental professionals can protect themselves from burnout and spillover stress.
