3 LIVE CE UNITS

Instructor: Dr. S.D. Shanti, D.D.S, M.P.H., Ph.D

About 20% of dental patients suffer from bruxism and clenching... but looking solely at the patient's mouth does not always provide a complete picture of what the root cause is. These conditions, which can cause not only chronic pain but also long-term physical damage, often go under-addressed for years or decades without true resolution.

This course teaches participants how to ask the questions that are often overlooked, in order to determine the full cause of the patient’s bruxing or clenching pattern—including both dental and psychological contributors. Participants will gain a diagnostic framework and learn a range of treatment plans based on the individual patient’s needs, which may include dental appliances and procedures, emotional regulation techniques, and/or cognitive behavioral techniques. This course will further address interprofessional collaboration as a component of long-term patient care.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Comprehend the biological and behavioral mechanisms of bruxism and clenching.
  • Apply a structured framework to evaluate patients and develop tailored treatment plans.
  • Differentiate between daytime and nighttime bruxism and the treatment planning implications of each.
  • Recognize stress-related habits and recommend behavior interventions or make referrals for effective stress management techniques.
  • Identify and address trigger points in the orofacial region resulting from bruxism and clenching, and use hands-on techniques for pain relief and resolution.
  • Recognize when to collaborate with other healthcare providers for optimal patient outcomes.

About Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Seminars:

A live, interactive webinar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community, except that you attend via your computer, tablet or mobile phone.  Each course is live and allows and encourages your participation.  As long as you have access to a  device that can play sound, you can participate in an ACES webinar. No special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webinars. When you enroll in an ACES course, you will be sent an email with the course syllabus and complete information on how to join the webinar. At the conclusion of your live webinar, you will receive an email with a link to your online quiz. Once you complete your quiz, you’ll automatically receive your continuing education certificate via email.
